G.W. “Big Daddy” Hutson founded Hutson Plumbing Co., Inc. in 1938. Three generations later the company still works from Bonaventure Road in Thunderbolt, on the same principle: Quality First. Relationship Driven.

Company history

Hutson Plumbing Company is a local commercial and residential plumbing company located in Thunderbolt, Georgia, serving the greater Savannah area as it has since its founding.

G. W. “Big Daddy” Hutson founded Hutson Plumbing Company in 1938 and ran the company successfully until 1959 when he passed the company down to his two sons — George L. and John R. Hutson.

Though the brothers ran the company together, George, being the oldest son, served as President of Hutson Plumbing until his retirement in 1987.

Big Daddy’s youngest son, John, became President after George.

In 1989, John’s daughter, Donna Hutson Moody, and his son-in-law, Lynn Moody, joined the Hutson Plumbing team; Lynn Moody went on to serve as Vice President of Operations.

Sixty-six years and four generations after Big Daddy began serving Savannahians, John’s grandson, Adam Moody, came to work for Hutson Plumbing in 2004.

John’s grandson-in-law, Boyce Young, joined the organization in 2014. As company officers, Adam Moody and Boyce Young carry Hutson Plumbing into the future.

Four generations

A trade handed down.

The company was built by a family that passed the work from one generation to the next. That is also how the trade works on a Hutson crew: experienced hands beside younger ones, the same standard for both.

The shop

329 Bonaventure Road.

The shop and yard in Thunderbolt are where prefabricated assemblies are built, trucks are loaded and the day starts. This aerial photograph hangs in the office.

The crew

The people behind the name.

The whole Hutson crew, photographed in front of the shop and the company sign on April 21, 1989. Many of the people who work here have done so for years, and the customers they serve know them by name.

Community

Part of Savannah.

In October 2005, Oglethorpe Lodge #1 of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows presented John Hutson with a plaque in appreciation of his kindness and generosity to the lodge and the community. It hangs in the office with decades of other reminders that the company belongs to this place.
